Devlog #1: The base game

Hello, I am L10nM4st3r, and I would like to share the progress of development for a game I’ve been working on for about a month now.

An orange ship on a procedural terrain.

The starting ship, the LWSS Skybeak.

The interior of the same ship in the above screenshot. Standing on an elevator with warning striped on it, looking towards the back of the ship.

Let me describe my game

In this game, you will explore a procedurally generated galaxy, similar to games like No Man’s Sky, Star Citizen, and Starfield.

You will be able to explore planets, talk to aliens, uncover the history, and play how you want to play. Want to be a space pirate? You can do that. Want to be a smuggler? Go ahead. Want to be a bounty hunter? Sure. Want to be a good, law abiding explorer? Ok.

Player walking up to their ship and entering, afterwards launches ship and faces up towards the sky.

Some solar systems will be unexplored, and will contain hidden secrets never seen before. Some others will be abandoned, and you can try to uncover the mystery why everyone left… Or if they even left alive in the first place. If you want to take a break from exploring lonely areas, visit one of the cities of an alien species.

You are not “the chosen one” who is magically destined to save the galaxy, unlike in most games. You can decide your own destiny. Will you be a bystander of the events that unfold, or will you impact them? Will you help save the milky-way galaxy, or destroy it? The choice is yours.

What I’ve done

I’ve been working on the game for a month now. The core game has been mostly completed.

Colourful, exotic plants on a procedural terrain.

  • You can explore planets, and explore a procedurally generated solar system.
  • The sun’s position in the sky is based on your position on the planet, as well as the time.
  • Plants sway in the wind, and containers can be interacted with to get items.
  • (Technical) Has floating-point error protection, if you travel too far in one direction, you will be invisibly repositioned to world origin.

What I plan to add

I have added the main features that makes the game comparable to a tech demo, and nothing more. There is still much more to do.

In the coming weeks I will work on adding more items, with item icons, as well as making it possible for your starship to take damage and make it possible for you to repair it.

Later on, I plan to add the following features:

  • Procedural ships randomly spawning while in space, allowing you to shoot at them.
  • NPCs (non-player characters) that you can talk to to get standing, learn about whats going on, and more.
  • NPCs that will shoot at you both in space combat, and ground combat. These encounters will be activated by breaking laws or by angering local outlaws.
  • More biomes that planets can use, which will include freezing, scorching, tropical, lush, swampy, toxic, radioactive, rocky, misty (swampy but with thick fog), and volcanic.
  • Animals that will wonder the surface of planets, that you can hunt for items, or just provide ambience.
  • Wonders to explore, like ancient ruins and abandoned towns for you to explore.
  • Caves that will offer unique items and gameplay experiences.
  • NPCs that will give quests to do various things, such as collecting items, hunting pirates, protecting a certain ship, item delivery, or uncovering an ancient artefact.
  • Buy a large ship and fly it across the galaxy, or use it in combat.
  • The story. Which I’m not going to spoil for you.

Although it doesn’t seem like a lot, I also have lots of assets that need to be made, new plants, animals, npcs, ect. This will take the majority of that time.

Everything else

The game uses the Godot Game Engine. I am a solo gamedev and this is my first full project I plan to finish.

I have spent a long time planning this game, and feel passionate about completing it. I hope you liked what I described here, and please leave a comment with your thoughts and suggestions below. Also if you have any suggestions for the name of my game, please do share. I have an idea for the name but it isn’t final, I don’t know if I will stick with it.

Finally, thank you, very much for spending your time to read this post. It means a lot to me.
